design: faerID

I´ve been a huge fan of the design studio FaerIDfor a long time. FaerID is the collaboration of Herborg Harpa Ingvarsdottir, architect, Thorunn Hannesdottir, product designer and the Swedish Karin Erikson, also a product designer, based in London. Their coat hanger Willow, is permanently on my personal Top 10 list of what I consider the crème de la crème of Icelandic product design.

Quite a lot of the products flowing from FaerID, entwine food and design, which for me personally is always an intriguing combination, I´m absolutely fascinated by food design in general. Among these are ginger bread baking molds, shaped after well-known buildings in Reykjavik and coasters in the shape of Iceland. I´m rather keen on the ones in bright yellow, they are just perfect for serving cold drinks while dining al fresco during the beautiful, and hopefully warm Icelandic summer. I´m also eagerly waiting for production to start on Askur, a picnic basket, handcrafted out of Icelandic birch, perfect for picnics out and about during the amazing Icelandic summers, which incidentally partly inspired it´s design. 

FaerID have also designed, produced and marketed pink wine gums, shaped as cancer ribbons, the international symbol for cancer awareness. The sweets are made using natural flavors and colors, but all the profit from it´s sale goes undivided to the Icelandic Cancer Society. FaerID latest products, introduced last month at DesignMarch, a week in Reykjavik celebrating Icelandic design, are sets of colorful tea towels where fish is one of the motives. FaerID´s products are available through FaerID and Reykjavik Corner Store website.
