Eight Ways to Combat the "No $pending Blues"

"The heart of her husband safely trusts her;
So he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good and not evil
All the days of her life…"
~ Proverbs 31:11-12 (NKJV)

"The wise woman builds her house,
But the foolish pulls it down with her hands."
~ Proverbs 14:1

Many of us were (or are) accustomed to heading out to the malls for a few hours of leisure. Once a necessity, shopping has turned into quite the hobby for the American public! But when cash is tight, it is more than recreation, it is an addiction that must be stopped before you run your household desolate. The next time you have that urge to spend, consider these happy options:

  • Organize What You Have
Organize all your belongings and streamline your home. This will give you a great sense of accomplishment and the realization that you probably already have everything you need. It will also aid you in running your home more efficiently and give you purpose to maintain what you have instead of bringing in more items to upkeep.

  • Rearrange
When you rearrange your furniture, it gives you that "new" feeling without spending a dime. Focus on one room a month. In our home, we have an autumn/winter arrangement of furniture which keeps the fireplace as the center of attention. In the spring/summer, I move everything around the coffee table where we gather with our iced-tea glasses and games.

  • Remember, Repaint, Recycle, Refurbish
Dig through your attic or basement and repurpose your old cast off's. When you sift through your surplus of goods, you will probably find something that you forgot about that will be "new" to you. A coat of paint does wonders and gives items a fresh identity. We usually have old cans lying in the garage and I make do with the colors we already have (mix the hues to create more volume or a new color).

  • $ell Your Excess
If you really need to purchase something out of necessity, sell off your excess first and recycle your money back into your wallet. Garage sales, eBay and Craig's List are all easy ways that you can market your goods from home. Just use caution and make sure your husband is home prior to accepting a stranger inside or you can always meet in a public parking lot for safety.

    • Alter What You Own
Altering your clothing is another way to bring the "new" back into your wardrobe. Go through your closet and fix the waistband of that once-favorite skirt, add a new panel of fabric to the bottom of your old skirt and replace boring buttons with pretty ones to give an updated look to an old blouse, etc.

    • Learn New Skills
Lean times can be the "glean" times. Your local community (library, craft stores, etc.) and many websites offer free classes in which you can learn new skills. These skills will enhance your life, teach you to enjoy hobbies at home and thus remove the need to shop all of the time. These are tools that can be passed down to your children and grandchildren like a perpetual gift that keeps on giving.

    • Love Your Library
Ah, the library is the heavenly headquarters for the thrifty minded woman! So many books to inspire you in all areas of life and they are free for the taking! Learn how to ferment, embroider, clean your house, knit, crochet, sew, can, craft, woodwork, etc. Read inspirational biographies that will teach you to count your blessings instead of spending more money. Knowledge is priceless and yet, it is absolutely free when you spend the time to acquire it!

    • Get Creative
I have noticed that the times the money is the tightest are the times that I become more creative and resourceful. That is always a challenge and it can be fun to do productive projects on a budget. Here are some  practical and inspirational posts to get you started:

May you be a blessing to your household and start curbing that spending habit.  May you be amongst the contented women that realize the best things in life aren't "things". Most importantly, may you be that heaven-sent angel in your earthly home since...

"a prudent wife is from the Lord" (Proverbs 19:14b).

Kate Greenaway 2014 Monthly Calendar ~ Free Printable

“Isn't it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?”

Here is the last set of "Monthly Printables" that we are sharing from our Kate Greenaway Collection. These monthly calendar pages would be perfect to place inside your home management binder. I three-hole punched the sheets and inserted the current month under the "daily section" so that I can conveniently have it in view. The remainder months will be stored in the "monthly work" section until they are necessary.

If you have had a rough year full of pain and sorrow, know that with His help, your broken heart can heal. If you live with mounds of regrets, today is the day to be cleansed. You have the choice to become sparkling and fresh.

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature:
old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."
    "And he died for all,
that those who live should no longer live for themselves
but for him who died for them and was raised again."
    ~ 2 Corinthians 5:15 (NIV)

I hope these printables and the new year will be a blessing to you and yours! If you have any problems accessing these monthly calendar pages, please let me know.

Monthly Shopping Lists ~ Free Printable

"The manner in which a housekeeper buys her groceries must depend upon where she lives and how large her family is. In a country place, where the stores are few and not well supplied, it is best to buy in large quantities all articles that will not deteriorate by keeping. If one has a large family a great saving is made by purchasing the greater portion of one's groceries at wholesale."

With increase costs of food and gas, I have been working on building up a plentiful pantry. Buying in bulk allows for lower prices and less grocery store runs. The second goal I have set is to do a once-a-month shopping day. My inspiration came from this book. With a year round garden, surplus of canned, dried and freezer goods, this goal is becoming more of a reality which really excites me!

With that being said, we are sharing our monthly shopping lists. If you are interested in doing something like this but don't know where to begin, you may want to print out our essential list for a stocked pantry and prepare from there.

We are placing our printable lists inside our home management binder. I three-hole punched the sheets and inserted the current month under the "daily section" so that I can conveniently add to it as needed. The rest will be stored in the "monthly work" section until I am ready for them. What will you do with yours?

If you have any problems accessing the printables, please let me know! Simply download from the link below, save and print.

Monthly To-Do Lists ~ Free Printable

"Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task."
    ~ William James

I am forever creating to-do lists. The feeling of crossing off an entry is delightful! It seems like there are two women in this world, one that loves the list and the one that shuns it. Lists are excellent if you are a Mary-minded person but can be a detriment to a Martha-minded woman (if not properly prioritized).

With that in mind, here is our monthly to-do list printable that may help to organize your days.  Unlike daily lists, monthly lists focus on larger projects and need to do's that often get neglected. They give you the ability to see what needs to be done on a larger scale and from there tasks can be delegated into your daily routine.

These sheets can be utilized for your homeschooling and homesteading projects. They would certainly make a nice addition to your home management binder. I three-hole punched ours and inserted them inside the "monthly work" section. What will you do with yours?

If you have any problems accessing the printables, please let me know! Simply download from the link below, save and print.

"Give Thanks" ~ Free Inspirational Art Printable

Beautifying your home is a very pleasant part of being a homemaker. I personally love the challenge of a frugally prepared project! You will find some autumn inspired ideas here that you can create inexpensively from your surroundings.

We are also sharing this printable of a "Scripture Picture" using chalkboard art. Perhaps you can use this as a thrifty way to decorate your home. It would also make an encouraging gift. Search for frames in second-hand stores and add your artistic flair with paint, items from nature or craft supplies. We printed ours on white card-stock, cut it down to size (leaving some white border as a "matting") and placed in an 8 by 10 inch frame.

To use, simply download from the menu below and print. Happy homemaking, ladies!

"Your Interior Decoration... Today" ~ Housecleaning Inspiration

The Open Window by Walter Gay

“Interior decoration is not just one's artistic efforts, but it is that which your home (even if it is just a room) is.

The Interior by Helen Galloway McNicoll

If you are 'decorating' with clothes draped on every chair, with scratched and broken furniture- it is still your interior decoration!

Blue and White by Walter Gay

Your home expresses you to other people, and they cannot see or feel your daydreams of what you expect to make in that misty future, when all the circumstances are what you think they must be before you will find it worthwhile to start.

The Artists Study by Walter Gay

You have started, whether you recognize that fact or not!

    The Commode by Walter Gay

We foolish mortals sometimes live through years not realizing how short life is,

and that TODAY is your life.”

~ Edith Schaeffer, The Hidden Art of Homemaking

    The Bedroom by Walter Gay

“The life of faith is lived one day at a time, and it has to be lived - not always looked forward to as though the "real" living were around the next corner. It is TODAY for which we are responsible. God still owns tomorrow.”
~ Elisabeth Elliot, Let Me Be a Woman

    This is the day which the Lord hath made;
we will rejoice and be glad in it.
