food: tea loaf with butter crumb topping

gunnar sverrisson / home and delicious

I promised today to post this recipe. I got the idea on Pinterest and really wanted to try it. I often get great inspiration on cooking and baking there. I have one more recipe in mind I'm hopefully gonna try this weekend. Just wait and see! Ok, I baked it yesterday, had to change some things I didn't have in my pantry and some taste I wanted more than other and here is the result...already had a slice this morning with white-vanilla tea. Delicious!

Tea loaf with butter crumb topping

Batter:
110 g butter
3/4 cup caster sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 tsk vanilla- or almond essence
1 1/2 cup flour
3/4 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsk baking soda
3/4 cup butter milk
3/4 cup chocolate chips

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celcius. Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs and the essence of your choice. Continue stirring until well combined. Add the dry ingredients, not the chocolate chips, and the butter milk. Stir until combined and then carefully add the chocolate. Spoon the batter into a baking pan, spread evenly.

Topping:
3/4 cup flour
3/4 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup cold butter
chocolate chips to spread on the topping

Thoroughly mix the ingredients with your fingertips until it becomes like a clumpy breadcrumbs. Do not over mix. Sprinkle the topping evenly on the cake batter, make sure the whole surface is covered. Spread chocolate chips on the top. Bake for 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake turns out clean. Let the cake cool completely before serving.

birds of a feather...in dark hues

...flock together in grey colour palette. I always like picking some images, finding the symmetry, creating a whole and imagine it as a home. That's what I did today after playing with spaces in grey and dark colour palette, as I've said many times before; I really like and it suits me and our family at home. But that doesn't mean at all that I'm not into white and bright, scandinavian or anything else. Actually I like far too many different kind of styles, so I need to define myself at home - know which route to go down. As I'm super keen on helping people to find what they want and lack at home regarding style and overall feeling, I'm open minded on different styles and what shows peoples personalities.

The grey rooms following are not in the same hue. Telling us about the endless possibilities paint has and how much it matters to study and find the right colour for your home. That's done in context of your furniture and accessories and what hue is the right for you - the basic colour tone in grey; natural one, blue, red, yellow...

Notice how grey elevates other colours and how white becomes outstanding and ballsy in the stark contrasts with dark hues. How wood, soft tones and texture are compelling in there. Brass and copper.

Stop now - next time, something else as beautiful but completely different. Have a nice day!

style: put on the pullover

It's pullover time...

No way to deny the beauty of autumn and the clothes we need to keep us warmer when the summer is fading out. It's all happening now. To stay positive and embrace the colours and nature we can think of all the ways we can dress to impress ourselves. Pullovers are a great start. I always love the sweater time of the year, before we need to dress heavier. Following are some ideas to steal showing how the pullover can follow you all day long. Loosen up in the morning and a little bit more dressed up when the sun sets.

A Homemaker's A-Z Index ~ Prepare Your Own Pantry/Products

Before there was the "grocery store" and "bulk food warehouses", there was your backyard…
“The first supermarket supposedly appeared on the American landscape in 1946. That is not very long ago. Until then, where was all the food? Dear folks, the food was in homes, gardens, local fields, and forests. It was near kitchens, near tables, near bedsides. It was in the pantry, the cellar, the backyard.”
~ Joel Salatin, Excerpt from

Do you feel the urge to build up your own reserves like the sisterhood before us? In these uncertain times, it is a personal goal of mine... We can produce items for our homes that do not include added chemicals, toxic processes and preservatives that are causing many bizarre health issues. By personally preparing our pantry foods, making our own medicinal remedies, being resourceful with what we grow and creating our own cleaning products, we can provide like the woman of yesteryear but with the blessing of modern day advantages.

Below is an A - Z index of homemaking recipes and ideas from this blog based upon "being creative with what you have". These items have been shared in the past and are being updated weekly. Be sure to check back (there will be a link to this post on my side bar) when you need some suggestions regarding what to do with your abundance of...

      1–10: plants and displays

      1–10

Greenery in displays. That's my cup of coffee. Plants add beautiful vibe of natural tones that's so nice to have surrounding us. It's charming to have plants a part of what matters in personal objects and environment we enjoy at home. One on a stack of books, many on a small table, in every room varying in size. The nature floods in and makes the connection to the raw and earthy hues necessary inside. Start today - buy one and use it in a display you'll create for the eye to enlighten on and get exited by.

      home visit: to italy

Not a completely a home but the house is a home and the home on the photos created with the helping hand of B&B Italia. I really had to publish this when I remembered last night and found it in my bookmarks. I fell for it when I saw it for the impeccable style and some great details everyone can steal at home. When we lived in Milano I visited two ladies whom runs a studio called Collage. They are art directors for B&B Italia and my opinion is that they do it amazingly well. When searching their inspiration in homes and styled images everything is done so interesting and super nice. The choose of colours, the light, texture, the houses, the vignettes.
This house, the building, is stunning, I know. But the interior too. Notice the dark navy-grey hue on the walls, some rooms are painted dark, other white and the ceilings are darks and so the floors. The tiles...nothing more to say. Ok, the furniture are fine – understatement, amazing. And the vignettes just fits so perfectly into that style created. Mixture of something delicate and great roughness. Where vintage and antique are the companions to the high design and complement the interior. Just a big like.

Dehydrating Your Giant Zucchini ~ Build Up Your Pantry

Is your garden starting to give you Z.O.U.S.'s (zucchini's of unusual size)? Consider shrinking them down. Won't they be wonderful in savory soups and sauces come autumn and winter? I love making these tiny additions to our pantry! Not only do they benefit the food budget, but they allow you to prepare future homemade meals in a pinch.

The first step is to gut the middle of the zucchini with a tablespoon. The seeds will be large with soft flesh because of the mature size, making it easy scoop it out. Feed this to your chickens or add to the compost pile.

Next, chop up the outer firm flesh into small cubes.

Place in a dehydrator for the amount of time that your zone calls for (this is located in your dehydrator manual).
Store your finished product in an airtight container.

To reconstitute: Place equal amount of boiling water to your amount of dried vegetable. Soak from 10 minutes to 2 hours depending on how soft you need them to be. You could also toss them directly into soups and sauces as they cook (which I do a lot of the time) but they may not be as tender or flavorful.

monday's mix – dress the week

This monday embraces the beauty in clothing. How to master the details, aesthetics, mood, style. I really love beautiful images of clothes and they are so inspiring for how to dress. How the simplicity just becomes so much more in a plain white shirt, a sweater or a coat. It gives me a boost and motivates me in dressing up a bit more on daily basis. The problem is that working from home makes me too often dress in homey clothes. It's a shame as much as I love dressing up every day. But I probably master it quite well to elevate the basics and I always put on some make up! I've been more selective in recent years on what to buy and some years ago I just started focusing on finding my true style to build on. I've always known what I like and love but having the focal point very clear has solved so many problems and made it really easy for me to pick what I would like in my closet and what suits me. I want everything there to mix very well and get together in great combinations. I could talk and chat about this subject for much longer but leave it for now. More later!
