location: photographs

Gunnar Sverrisson

At home we have a wall of pictures Gunnar has shot during the years. I was standing in front of it yesterday and wandering about the set up and how many questions I get from people about how to display images and small art works. For one great image it can cause problems to find the right place. Then the idea occurred to me to take a photo by Gunnar and insert it in few different images, in different rooms and in different location. Hope you enjoy it.

It’s always an easy solution to lean an image up against the wall and therefor be a part of a display.
In terms of that it turns out great to locate an image very low, close to the table line, around 5-10 cm.

Locate pictures rather low than high. It’s much more of an statement.
For one medium format image or art work on a wall, it’s often assumed that
the center of an image is around 165-170 cm high.

Where nothing stands up against one wall, furniture, and the wall is beautiful up and down,
like in bedrooms, it can be a great set up to hang images very low. When sitting on the bed,
the centre of the image can be in the height of your eyes.

style: patches on elbows

There's something charming, old-fashioned, classy and cozy about elbow patches.
They've been in and out of fashion during the decades but as everything seems to be in these days
so are the patches. Let's hope it will be that way forever.

10 spaces – interesting shelvings ideas

10

Spaces with interesting and more often quite different than usual kind of shelvings. I've always been a true fan of shelvings and nice executed ideas of creating them unconventionally. The perfectly imperfect way of displaying and all the nice objects great shelves can carry for us. Seeing images of shelves I look at them and collect them and the ones I publish now are ten of the latest in my shelving collection! Get inspired.

This one on the first image is a hit - actually not a shelving, more tables turning into one.

The grey one I really like. I'm fond of ideas using cheap timber panels and plywood to make furniture and also then to paint them in the wall colour.

Shelvings don't need to be symmetrical.

True classic - the free standing wire shelving units. Multifunctional and I can't
remember a room where mine have not been in use.

And then this idea is something to use. Put a small shelving unit on top of
a sideboard or drawing units. Voilá – unique interior.

design: eley kishomoto on designmarch

DesignMarch is Iceland’s most important annual design event. For four days, from the 14thof March, Reykjavik plays host to hundreds of openings, exhibitions, workshops and events, spreading across the city from the harbour to the lava fields surrounding it. Starting with a day of international Design Talks, the festival showcases the best local creative scene, ranging from architecture to fashion, fonts, furniture and food design. I was thrilled when I saw that the design team behind Eley Kishimoto, the couple Mark Eley and Wakako Kishimoto are among lecturers. They have worked together for over two decades and are known for working on the edge of the traditional fashion world, with their colourful clothing and accessories as completely unique pattern design. This is an event anyone interest in fashion and design should attend.

last week's obsession: plants

Last week I was pretty "obsessed" by the idea that now was the right time to go and find some plants to bring to our home. I did this weekend – the truth is I started actually four years ago when I wanted to make our home a little bit greener, got a plant from a woman I worked for and needed to take great care of it for months. When I had managed to do so, I didn't keep on going ... until now. I took some time to choose the right ones, with beautifully green leaves and different types, quite small though, found some spots for them as part of displays and I really like it. It add some touch I felt needed and if finding some more I have space I would like to fill. But now the problem is to keep them alive and get them growing!
